The weaponsmith finished his artifact -- a copper crossbow. Nodding with satisfaction at getting something genuinely useful, I assign it to our Professional Marksdwarf. I also build an archery target in the barracks, so he may truly master it. With the workshop cleared, I order another four steel battle axes made with our dwindling fuel supply, to finish outfitting our squad. A pity he did not gain any skill, or even shake off the rust on his skill.

A vein of lignite is struck underground, north of the brook. I set five smelters to process lignite into coke on repeat. Very soon over a hundred lignite rocks are liberated, ready to be processed.

Oh you have GOT to be kidding me.
He arrived from the north, right next to the bodies of our comrades.

Maybe this ettin will be a blessing in disguise; rather than further defiling dwarven corpses, he made a beeline for the nearby trolls and started fighting them. He killed one and wounded three, before the nearest Goblin Elite Crossbowman led his squad over, and planted his first bolt squarely in one of the ettin's throats. The monster was dead mere moments later. The other goblin squads started moving, but hopefully they will continue to wander near the edges of our territory. I also notice that the dwarven ghost nearby has killed a goblin as well. Maybe an entire army of undead could save us... nay, not even a King could command the undead to fight his wars for him.

All the goblins and trolls on the north side of the map are circling around, agitated by the bodies of our dwarves and the human traders and the ettin. I hope they are not massing for a charge, but they continue to not come closer to our forts. Whoever it was that dug aboveground moats up here has made the terrain quite treacherous, and I must be careful not to accidentally give the goblins access to the fort before I am ready, or we will be slaughtered. And here I thought digging near the river source was nervewracking...
Since the walled off plateau seems to still be safe, I give the order to butcher the yak in our fields. It was already eating too much, stripping grass and leaving bare clay behind.

Logs from the caverns are starting to come up. It pains me greatly to spend them, but I order twenty training spears made from them. Our military needs to be ready for what will come.

I wonder why no rock pots have been made, and I notice that the empty craftsdwarf workshops have been locked to two single dwarves. While normally I applaud letting master crafters do the work, we simply cannot afford such elitism right now. I wonder what other hidden booby traps await me throughout the fortress.
As if on cue, Udil Kukuburrith gives birth to a girl.
I also notice that no steel chainmail has been made for our troops, and I order mail shirts and leggings made.

With the cavern stripped of all readily-available trees, I order the entrance walled off for the moment. We will return in good time, but for now keeping the fort safe is more pressing.
With over 200 lignite mined out, I turn my attention to our new, heavily trapped entrance. I decide to place it in the south, as there are huge fields of soil that will be quick do dig through, and I don't want to lose the lignite veins in the north.
